The Lobo VentureLab

Moving an idea from concept to market is an exciting prospect, but it can be a daunting task. Useful technologies are just a starting point. The process of forming a company can be mysterious. However, there are many sources of assistance and information available to the inventor. The Lobo VentureLab (LVL), within the STC.UNM family, is such a resource: a connection point for university researchers, inventors, faculty, students, entrepreneurs, venture capital firms, and small technology companies in various stages of development. The LVL assists with the commercialization of technologies and facilitates the formation of start-up companies. The LVL equips these new companies with a healthy foundation and necessary resources—improving the chance for success.

The LVL often collaborates with faculty inventors, entrepreneurs, and University of New Mexico (UNM) business students to perform market research and advance business opportunity overviews cultivated from UNM-developed technologies. UNM and LVL representatives research, position, and identify strategies for the commercialization of these technologies. Such things as market potential and competitive environment are key factors examined during placement of these technologies. Student teams also develop detailed cost and revenue models determining profit potential and rates of return.

Are you an entrepreneur or investor looking to build a start-up company?

STC.UNM has several packaged opportunities ideal for start-up companies. Opportunities are technology groupings available for licensing. The LVL supports companies considering licensing technology from UNM, or companies who would benefit from collaboration with the University. Through outreach events and research of firms, STC.UNM and the LVL identify companies in New Mexico working in areas key to the University and the state's economy.

The Accelerator

LVL's "Accelerator" is a pilot program providing shared office facilities, business services, mentoring, advice, and the location of the specialized facilities and laboratories required to support life sciences-, physical sciences-, and engineering-oriented ventures. The LVL continually communicates with existing incubators to find appropriate enterprises to work with these facilities. The Accelerator is an ideal complement to the existing functions and relationships of the LVL and STC.UNM.
